It's been said that the Web is not a piece of paper.
Indeed, commercial web design is really about facilitating communication and marketing in a high-tech digital medium — with all that that implies.
One of the problems in shopping for a web designer is the difficulty in knowing just what the topic of "web design" encompasses — or whether you're hearing the whole story, let alone whether the web designers you may talk to can produce a website that has a chance of fulfilling your goals.
If you've had these thoughts, you're right. It pays to know that the term web design means only the ability to design and build a website. It does not imply the ability to create a website that will show up well in the search engines, nor a knowledge of marketing and sales, nor even the ability to communicate well — visually or in writing. Nor, to be honest, the ability to build a website properly. Or even to design well.
